Buhay HOSTESS: HUWAG HAMAKIN

Itinatanghal sa Huwag Hamakin: Hostess (JPM Productions, Inc., 1978) ang salimuot ng buhay siyudad sa pamamagitan ng mga pangunahing tauhang sina Tonya (Nora Aunor) at Alice (Alma Moreno). Sila ang sentro, ang nagpapadaloy sa iba't-ibang salaysay ng pagpuputa sa ngalan ng pag-ibig. Katulong si Tonya sa tinitirahang boarding house ni Johnny (Orestes Ojeda), isang estudyante. Di naglaon, nahulog ang loob ni Tonya sa simpatikong binata. Samantala, nakilala ni Johnny si Alice sa kolehiyo at agad itong naakit sa angking kagandahan ng dalaga. Nagpupumilit magtapos sa kolehiyo si Alice nang makaahon sa kahirapan at magkaroon ng magandang kinabukasan kaya nag-aaral ito sa araw at namamasukan bilang hostess sa gabi. Upang matutustusan ang kanyang mga pangangailangan, kinumbinsi ni Johnny si Tonya na mag-hostess at pinangakuan niya ito ng kasal sa sandaling makapagtapos ng pag-aaral. Sa club unang nagkakilala sina Tonya at Alice hanggang sa maging magkaibigan ang dalawa. Itinuro ni Alice kay Tonya ang lahat ng kanyang nalalaman ukol sa kanilang hanapbuhay.Kapwa nila inililihim sa isa't-isa ang identidad ng kanilang mangingibig. Lingid sa kaalaman ng dalawa, sinusustentuhan din si Johnny ni Merle (Bella Flores), ang floor manager ng club na kanilang pinapasukan. Nang dumating ang pagkakataon kanilang matuklasang si Johnny ang kapwa nila kasintahan, walang tigil sa pasaringan sina Alice at Tonya. Titigil lamang sa pagtatalo ang dalawa nang ipangako ni Johnny sa bawat isa na ito ang magsasabit ng sampaguita sa araw ng kanyang pagtatapos sa kolehiyo. Ngunit isang di inaasang pangyayari ang magaganap hanggang sa matutunang tanggapin nina Tonya at Alice ang katotohanan.

Walang pagkukunwaring isinapelikula ng Huwag Hamakin: Hostess ang mga kompleksidad na inihain nito. Kasiya-siyang kuwento ito ng mga karaniwang babaeng nakupot sa pag-ibig at pagmamahal. Iniwasan ng pelikula ang puti at itim na depiksyon ng mga puta. Sa halip, binigyan ng bagong imahen ang mga melodramatikong arketipong ito nang may sensitibong pagbatid sa panig na tumatampok sa halip na kumakalimot sa mahapding mga dimensiyon ng mga karanasang babae sa di-matatag at laging nagbabagong papel ng kababaihan sa lipunan. Ipinahiwatig ang kompleksidad na ito sa pamamagitan ng matipid na espasyo at kumpas ng mga eksena at bihasang direktoryal na pagmamaneobrang nagpapatuloy sa tensiyon ng nagbabanggaang ideyolohiya ng pagiging babae. Mas dramatiko ring isinakonkreto ito ng mahusay na pagganap ni Nora Aunor bilang katulong na namasukan bilang hostess upang matustusan ang pag-aaral ng lalaking iniibig, pinapanood natin siya habang dumaraan sa proseso ng lumbay, pagkabigo at pagtanggap. Matingkad ang kanyang pagkakaganap dahil hinahatak niya tayong damhin ang kanyang mga dilemma habang nakikibaka siyang matanggap ang pagtataksil ng kasintahan. Katangi-tangi rin ang pagganap ni Alma Moreno at totoong nabawasan ang kanyang hysterical gestures sa pelikulang ito ngunit wala rin naman siyang ipinakitang bagong kakayahan para pangatawanan ang papel ng isang babaeng pilit ibinabangon ang sarili upang di-tuluyang masadlak sa kinagisnang uri ng pamumuhay. Humahantong man ang resolusyon sa antas ng pantasya, nang mapilitang magkasundo ang magkakatunggali lalo na nang kanilang matuklasan ang katotohanang may sariling pamilya ang lalaki. Sa pagtatapos ng pelikula, pilit na binuo ng dalawa ang pira-piraso ng kanilang nadurog na sarili at bumalik sa pagiging babae ang esensiya ng kanilang pagkatao.
